April 21 British royal governor of Virginia, John Murray, Lord Dunmore, orders a store of the colony’s gunpowder to be seized. Alarmed militiamen led by patriot Patrick Henry insist the gunpowder be returned. The Gunpowder Incident is resolved without fighting when Dunmore pays for the seized gunpowder.
