Steel Fist Miniatures has launched a new range of 15mm miniatures suitable for the English Civil War. The infantry range consists of two sets of armoured pike (one of models with shouldered pikes and one with models in a charging pose) and two of shotte (one with shouldered arms and one giving fire). The cavalry consists of twelve sets of horse, covering trotters, gallopers, dragoons, and cuirassiers. Steel Fist intends for this to be a comprehensive range, so it will include artillery and Scots Covenanters at a future date. The models are well cast and sculpted, with a tiny little bit of flash on the base of a few of them. The detailing is very good and accurate. Pikes are provided with the infantry, in the form of plastic rods – strong and flexible so they will bend and not break. Guard your purses, ECW fans, for these are nice!

Wild West civilians

Company: Empress Miniatures

Size: 31mm ‘foot to eye’ or 34mm tall

Era: Wild West

Price: £10.00 for the four

The latest release for Empress’ The Wild Bunch cowboy range adds some civilians to the saloon table. The models are inspired by Seth MacFarlane’s comedy Western A million ways to die in the West (2014), which is apt. The figures left to right are Louise (Arnold’s ex), Foy (Louise’s suave new man with moustache), Arnold the failed sheep farmer, and Anna, the gal who knows how to handle a gun! The likenesses of these models might be lost on people who aren’t familiar with the films, but these made me smile. The miniatures are well sculpted and cast, with excellent posing and accuracy. Size-wise, the models are heroic in stature with realistic proportions. Any mould lines are hard to spot and they just needed some slight cleaning up on the base with a knife. This range will be a useful addition for all Western afficionados.
