Despite all the spectacular scenes we get to see nowadays via the swipe of a thumb, there are still places that take your breath away when you encounter them in the flesh. Some are thousands of kilometres away; others are right in our backyard. Cape Point remains one such place for me. No matter how many times I go there, I’m still awestruck when the road suddenly bends towards the sea, the land drops away, and you're skirting the south-westernmost edge of the African continent.

For such a wild, rugged place, getting there is a straightforward affair: you simply drive down the ever-narrowing Cape Peninsula – either on the Atlantic side, past the enclaves of Kommetjie, Misty Cliffs and Scarborough; or along the False Bay coast, with its gentrified coffee shops and bohemian
