SHORT-BARRELED BULLET TECH

Hunting with a handgun is something of a mystery to many outdoorsmen, but it’s the holy grail of thrill and skill to others. I find it to be something of a late-season pursuit, wherein I allow myself the luxury of challenge after my freezer has been filled courtesy of guns with a longer reach. The dedicated pistoleros among us seldom stain their hands with a rifle, but today, there’s a blurred line when it comes to just what that difference amounts to.

THE (G)OLDEN DAYS OF HAND-GUN HUNTING

The 1950s was arguably the golden age of handgun hunting, as it saw the greatest influx of new calibers and ideas—chief among them the .44 Remington Magnum. Inseparably linked to handgun hunting is Elmer Keith, a name many of you’ll immediately recognize as the “father” of the magnum pistol. Keith wore many hats in his life—in addition to the Stetson he was commonly photographed with—cartridge designer, author, rancher, arsenal inspector and others. His works shaped handgun hunting as we know it today, and his influence has remained strong more than 30 years after his death.
