New beginnings
Looking down at my phone, my friends were pinging messages about having their first mammogram.
Having volunteered at a local cottage hospital, I’ve cared for many women who have suffered from breast cancer which made me extra aware of my breasts.
Also, it made me aware of how common breast cancer is – one in eight women are diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime.
Out of the six of us, the chances of one of us getting it are pretty high, I worried to myself.
Strolling out of the local hospital in Newcastle, in April 2019, I was confident my routine mammogram wouldn’t show anything as I didn’t have any symptoms.
Only two weeks later, I received a ‘further investigations’ letter.
Don’t worry, they won’t find anything,’ I said confidently
