To be honest, you need nothing more than a pin or even a pencil to sgraffito – literally, any pointed tool will work. We are not suggesting these make the best tools, but they do have their place and may be worth testing before you spend money on dedicated tools. After all, it would be a shame to go to the expense only to find you don’t like the technique.

If you want to look for dedicated tools, pottery suppliers generally have a good choice, ranging in price from the Diamond Core tool at the bottom of the image, which is fantastic to use but really expensive to buy – to more moderate versions in terms of cost. Some come in little packs with multiple shaped heads, which are useful because it’s helpful to have a range of tools for different sorts of marks – pointed tip versions are super for drawing fine lines, but you will need broader bladed tools for
