When Italy coach Roberto Mancini reassembled his Azzurri squad at the end of August for the first time since this summer’s spectacular Euro 2020 victory, he inevitably offered a number of reflections about the way forward. As Italy prepared to defend their 34-match unbeaten run in September World Cup qualifiers against Bulgaria, Switzerland and Lithuania respectively, Mancini had this to say: “Anyone who played for us in the last three years should count themselves European champions, even if they didn’t make it into the final squad”.
