IT’S NO SECRET THAT CERTAIN cities in Arizona, California, and Florida have long been hotbeds of auction activity, often producing record results that are discussed throughout the year. But plenty of auction activity takes place right there in the heartland, in places like Tulsa, Oklahoma, where Mecum Auctions hosted a sale on June 11-12. The two-day affair represented the Wisconsin-based company’s inaugural Sooner State visit, for an event populated with in-house bidders and spectators alike.
Interest in Ford automobiles ran strong at this sale, and the Blue Oval claimed half of the top-10 sales results after the last hammer fell. Leading the way was a 7,000-mile 2006 Ford GT, discussed in more detail within this report, that brought $330,000 (all listed sale prices include a buyer’s premium). Much like Le Mans in 1966 (model years excepted), a 2005 Ford GT finished second, here realizing $302,500, while another 2006 Ford GT finished third when it sold for $280,500. Racing its way into fourth overall was an impressive 1957 Ford Thunderbird, also discussed in more detail on these pages, that brought $203,500, while an attractive 1963 Chevy Corvette split window coupe restomod landed in fifth
