At the heart of social overwhelm is often a fear of missing out. Low-level anxiety and self-doubt can convince you that saying no to a social event is just too much of a risk to take. It’s often a fear of your own feelings, and doubts that you could cope with the disappointment if it turns out you said no to the best get-together all year. Social overwhelm can also be mixed up with other people’s feelings and what they think about you.
