“I like it when the surface gets a bit cluttered…” Melissa Gordon is reflecting upon her artistic process. “That’s how we see things in life. Like our phones, and then behind them are people and advertisements, and behind that is a station or whatever. We often have a screen in front of the world, so I like when my paintings have elements which float and interrupt the eye. I hope they play with the contemporary feeling of how information is stacked.” Reimagining and distorting a range of sources, her practice melds the figurative and abstract forms to explore how realty can be manipulated over time - particularly when it comes to representation in art.
