1. Penny Lane. Just before The Beatles recorded their landmark Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band album, John Lennon and Paul McCartney crafted songs about the parts of Liverpool that left an indelible mark on them. John gave the world Strawberry Fields while Paul eulogised Penny Lane. More than 50 years later many thousands of Fab Four devotees traverse that lane every year searching for the barber showing photographs of every head he’s had the pleasure to know.
