CREATING MORE JOY
Departing from his trademark black uniform, when we meet Christopher Kane at his Dalston studio, he’s wearing a paint-striped 1982 logo T-shirt. Tammy, his elder sister, muse and co-creative director is wearing a Smudge cotton shirt from the label’s SS21 collection, which was inspired by Christopher’s new-found love of painting during lockdown.
“I was literally bored. It was really nice having some time off, for a moment, and then, as creative people do, I became jittery and tetchy, like, oh my God, I need to be doing something,” he says, settling into a bench across from us in his whitewashed studio.
Having gone online to purchase some “crafty items” he found that many art tools and materials had sold out, because “everyone was crafting”, so he found himself buying a job lot of glitter and PVC glue.
“That’s all that was left: the bad, or the good, the ugly – whatever stuff,” he laughs mischievously. “It took me back to being a teenager. Glitter was one of the main ingredients when I was painting then. I love how it’s instant gratification, it’s very Art Attack, very old
