YOUR ANCESTORS & EUROPE’S WORST EARTHQUAKE

At about 5.20 in the morning on 28 December 1908, Europe’s worst earthquake took place. The epicentre was the Straits of Messina – a narrow waterway separating the toe of Italy from the island of Sicily. Two towns on either side of the Straits experienced the greatest damage: Messina in Sicily, and Reggio di Calabria on the Italian mainland. They were both popular holiday destinations.
