CHICAGO — Tony La Russa was sitting in his office with a group of reporters at old Comiskey Park after the Chicago White Sox’s 1983 season came to a crashing halt in Game 4 of the American League Championship Series.
The phone rang, and after a couple of rings, La Russa picked it up.
