TOM MCEWEN is without doubt one of the nicest guys in eventing. Despite his recent rise to Olympic glory — he netted team gold and individual silver in Tokyo — he is down-to-earth, modest and humble. He’s also unwaveringly laid-back and I find it hard to imagine that anything really bothers him.

In fact, you’d be forgiven for thinking that Tokyo wasn’t his first rodeo, and that he had actually notched up a number of gold and silver-medal winning Olympic performances, such is the 30-year-old’s composure.

“People ask if going to the Olympics felt like a surreal dream, but it actually felt like the natural next step,” says Tom, who is a Jump 4 Joy ambassador. “My first aim in life was to win a five-star, which we did a couple of years ago [at Pau in 2019], and then I wanted to go to the Olympics, so
