The City the Quake Built

It’s 10 years since the Christchurch earthquake — not so long in the story of a city, but a sizeable portion of the lives of its citizens. A child starting at intermediate school at the time of the quake might this year be finishing university. That child will have grown up in a city in “recovery”.

The remaking of Christchurch, especially the CBD, has been a huge and often contentious endeavour. For most of the post-quake decade, the Anglican ChristChurch Cathedral served as the touchstone for an emotionally charged debate between those who wanted to move on and those who wanted to hold on.
