TOYOTA’S TWIN TO the Subaru BRZ, the GR 86, is due to reach Aussie shores within the first half of 2022 and the anticipation is palpable. The pared-back originals shocked the world on debut and the heavily redesigned follow-ups seek to capture the magic while rectifying as many of the original’s criticisms as it can.

Torsional rigidity has been improved by 50 per cent, power by 21kW and torque by 38Nm. A bore increase of 8mm provides the enlarged 2.4-litre displacement, and subsequently improved outputs, and ultimately seeks to solve the original car’s infamous torque dip. Weight gains have also been kept to a minimum, thanks to the adoption of an aluminium roof and front guards, new seats and a redesigned muffler.

A rubber upgrade to Michelin Pilot Sport 4s replace the notorious economy-spec original Premacy hoops and, while no 0-100km/h times have been published, you can expect times to drop to around 6.5sec.
