TIMELINE OF… MILITARY DECORATIONS

ANCIENT AWARDS

Military decorations are first recorded in the Ancient Egyptian Old Kingdom with the ‘Order of the Golden Collar’. The Romans award a ‘Hasta Pura’ decoration of a special spear for valorous acts or a sculpted disc called a ‘phalera’.

MEDIEVAL ORDERS

European knights are often accepted into chivalric Orders for meritorious acts of personal military service.
