Zambezi River Memories

ABOUT 60 YEARS ago, the Zambezi River and surrounding area were vastly different from hat they are today. The water was clear apart from when in flood, and was sweet tasting and good to drink.

In ate 1957, I arrived at Victoria Falls to serve as a junior ranger for Rhodesia’s Department of National Parks & Wildlife. The tiny village had one grocery store, Chippy Wood’s restaurant, the National Park rest camp, Soper’s curio shop and the Victoria Falls Hotel. The airstrip could take small planes only, so tourists had to drive to get to the falls.
