HOFESH Shechter is very big deal in international dance circles. Feted for his choreography, he is in high demand among some of the biggest-name companies in the world: Paris Opera, Sadler’s Wells, Netherlands Dance Theatre, to name a few. The British-based Israeli has his own company and has recently worked with Brisbane company, Australasian Dance Collective, and has partnered with Strut Dance in Perth. Shechter is a busy man – not only does he choreograph but he writes his own music.
I had the chance to talk to him about his practice and future endeavours and found him to be refreshingly open. He exuded an irrepressible passion for all facets of his creations: from the music and dance to staging and the ideas and energies that act as “fuel” for performance-making.
