Can we agree that getting to third downs is bad for an offense?

Much more so than on first and second downs, the offense is at the mercy of the defense on third downs. As of games through Week 7 of the 2020 regular season, only three offenses in the league are converting over 50 percent of their third down opportunities. New Orleans is at 55 percent, Buffalo is at 52.4 percent, and the Steelers now sit at 51.1 percent.

Remember, these are the very best teams in the league when they snap the ball on third downs. That includes third-and-1s as well as third-and-20s. On the other hand, 10 teams are converting less than 40 percent. The other 19 teams in the league are between 40 percent and 50 percent at creating
