“I was drawn to hoop because of how magical it looked.
I wanted to actualise that feeling and feel the freedom in its movement. I never planned to take up hoop-dancing as a career; I just felt a deep desire to share this art form with other people.
I guess it was this sense of purpose that led me to where I am today.
Hooping hails from Native America—it’s a folk dance, of sorts—and was taken up as a fun pastime in America, in the ’50s.
In India, many people respond to this art form with some confusion. Until 2018, I would often hear comments like, ‘Yeh pipe kyun ghuma rahe ho?’ [Why are you twirling a pipe?].
