PARADISE LOST

Criticallyacclaimed director Deepa Mehta’s recent offering, Funny Boy, follows the life of Arjie, a queer, Sri Lankan Tamil boy in 1970s Colombo. The visually-lush narrative, based on the eponymous novel by author Shyam Selvadurai, is set against the backdrop of escalating ethnic conflict between the Tamil Sri Lankan and Sinahlese communities, in the years leading up to the 1983 Black July uprising and the decades-long Sri Lankan Civil War.
