The Achaemenid Persian miniature army is certainly a challenge to collect. Not only are the troops numerous, but they are also often highly decorated figures with some incredible striping and piping on even the lowliest archers. The pursuit is further challenged by the notion that Persians were terrible soldiers and their armies were huge but awful. This is mostly based on Greek source bias, but it does not take into account the century of conquest and the victories that honed the army. The real problem the Persians had was with their leadership, which often betrayed the bravery of their troops. The armies often were cobbled together and had little time to develop the tactical coordination that would have served them better against the well-oiled Macedonian machine.
