Why?
Brittany’s beaches are fabulous, but there’s great history and spectacular countryside to explore, too
I sink a little lower in my comfortable camping chair, fingers curled around a glass of local Breton cider, breathe a contented sigh and watch my breath float away on the early evening air. It really doesn’t get much better than this. Sitting outside our motorhome with my husband Ro on the final evening of our tour of Brittany, I think back to the great sights we’ve seen and the wonderful places we discovered.
Our journey actually began almost two weeks ago, although in some ways it feels much longer. We’ve seen so much since then, beginning with a quick visit to Pegasus Bridge in Normandy.
Having left home at silly-o’clock, we managed to board an early ferry from Dover to Calais – okay, so the driving would have been significantly less had we opted for the Portsmouth-Caen route, but we prefer to travel under our own steam rather than opting for the longer ferry crossing.
On the ferry, I was reminded of one of the reasons why I love motorcaravanning. As we wandered the decks looking for a perch for the trip, I was amazed at the queues for an onboard breakfast.
Sitting smugly watching other passengers grow ever more impatient as they stood in line, I pictured the bacon butties we would soon cook for ourselves in comfort, somewhere on the French coast!
