The following are some “Believe It or Not” fishing stories I’ve written over the years about the days “back when” in Lahaina Harbor. Boats and names are anonymous to protect the guilty.
No Hooks Needed
One day, a 130-lb blue marlin came in on a short-corner lure and hooked up, but broke the line and swam free. The marlin then started jumping around in circles, trying to spit the hooks, but couldn’t. With five lines still in the water, the captain made a turn to head back to the fish. The marlin was still jumping around in circles as they caught up to it. As the marlin came up to the starboard corner of the boat, a crewman grabbed a long mahimahi gaff and nailed the marlin in the tail.
