LAMMA 2022 PREVIEW: Machinery back on show

Exhibitions continue to divide the industry and as before there are some major names missing. New Holland has increased its commitment by bringing its tractors rather than just the implements with which the company dipped its toe in 2020 and Massey Ferguson has gone down the dealer route with leading Midlands franchisee Chandlers representing the brand on its return to the show, while AGCO stable-mates Fendt and Valtra maintain their manufacturer presence. In celebrating its 40th anniversary however, LAMMA remains the one UK exhibition where you can check out everything from a spanner to a combine, or a forage analysis app to the forager itself.

Highlight of the enlarged New Holland presence is the the T6.180 Methane Power which features a re-engineered six-cylinder FPT Industrial NEF engine producing a maximum boosted output of 175hp, like its diesel-fuelled equivalent. Gas injectors and spark plugs replace the diesel injector, with the gas injected into each cylinder for constant, clean, maximised combustion.

Compared to the limits allowed under EU Stage V emissions rules, carbon monoxide emissions from the methane-powered T6.180 are 80% lower, while the level of non-methane hydrocarbons is reduced by 90%. Particulate matter is down by 98%, nitrous oxide by 62%, and CO2 by 11%. However, the T6.180 Methane Power has the same 175hp maximum power output with boost as its conventional cousin and produces maximum torque of 740Nm. Running costs are said to be up to 30% lower.

The fuel tank on the diesel equivalent T6.180 is swapped for a combination of ten tanks arranged around the centre of the chassis. The front-mounted ‘range extender’ unit can be replaced with a front linkage and pto or removed for loader work. With 453 litres of gas capacity, the tractor is said to hold sufficient fuel for around eight hours of road haulage or pto work.

Other new models include the T7 Heavy Duty (HD) with Horizon Ultra cab and latest PLM Intelligence features.

The cab has been lengthened to provide additional room for the passenger and more floor space, with extra storage, improved visibility and new work light package with up to 24 LED lights. The
