Watching Mum pull the mince pies from the oven, my tummy rumbled. They smelt delicious.

‘Leave them alone,’ Mum warned. ‘They’re for Bradley.’

‘Yeah, yeah,’ I grumbled.

But I was only pretending.

Like Mum and Dad, I thought the world of Bradley Jones, then 16.

He was my brother Freddie’s best mate.

He was kind, funny and thoughtful.

It was December 2014, and as I watched Bradley walk up our driveway, I rushed to open the door.

‘Can you help me with my homework later?’ I begged.

I was only 11.
