hough it is always a pleasure – albeit rather a bleak one – to read about and listen to Schubert’s great song cycle (see , p32), I’ve recently had my attention caught by thes 2007 horn concerto of the same name. In this instance, the journey described in the music is one into a dark forest as part of a hunt – remembered by the composer from when he was a youngster. Penderecki is superb at conjuring the unsettling atmosphere of the wood as experienced through a child’s perspective, but there are also thrills along the way as the music takes on an almost cinematic quality.
