LOS ANGELES SUBMARINES

The United States has always been at the forefront of the development of nuclear propulsion for submarines. In April 1955 they commissioned the world’s first nuclear submarine, USS Nautilus, and by the mid-1960s the US Navy had a large fleet of hunter killer and ballistic missile submarines.
At the beginning of the 1960s plans were being drawn up for their replacement, and the new design eventually became the Los Angeles class, of which 62 boats were built. In a departure from usual US Navy practice the Los Angeles class boats were not named after marine creatures but after large towns and cities in the US.
