The first Normans arrived in southern Italy around 1030 as mercenaries brought in to fight in the wars between Italian, Byzantine and Arab rulers. Sicily and southern Italy were frontier regions where widely diverse cultures lived in close proximity. There was a strong Byzantine legacy in Sicily, Calabria, Apulia and Naples.
