In the not-too-distant future, babies may have their whole genomes sequenced at birth to provide the health information that will guide a lifetime of care. As a result, rare disorders will be picked up earlier and more easily, screening for genetic cancers will be personalised and doctors will be better equipped to prescribe the most effective medication for every patient.
