Cancer risk

Radiation is known to damage DNA, increasing the risk of mutations and potentially leading to cancer, so monitoring of cancer incidence after radio-iodine, a common treatment for hyperthyroidism, is vital. A meta-analysis of data from 500,000 people treated with radio-iodine has, reassuringly, found no increase in the risk of specific cancers, except for thyroid cancer (an already known risk that is monitored for in patients on this treatment), where the incidence was nearly doubled.
