Towards the end of the 1950s, the Lambretta was regarded as one of the world’s finest motor scooters with its only serious rival being the Vespa. This was a time of intense rivalry between the two marques and to stave off the competition from Piaggio, Innocenti knew they had to develop a new model. This was to be completely different from that which had gone before, a new design that was improved cosmetically but more importantly one that was mechanically more advanced.
