In his former life, the one before he sold more than 100 million books, Lee Child worked in television. The pre-pseudonymous James Grant was a presentation director at Granada Television in Manchester, home to Coronation Street, University Challenge and other long-running, action-packed shows.
Having become the shop steward and found himself in a losing battle against management intent on breaking the union, Grant was made redundant in 1995. He started his first Jack Reacher novel that year. Unemployment didn’t prove a problem.
Now, his writing career has been bookended by the small screen. He’s an executive producer on , the new Amazon Prime series based on , that first of his two dozen thrillers featuring the roving big dude with the unstoppable urge to put things right in various backwaters
