6 January committee will go to jail, predicts Gingrich
Newt Gingrich, a former House speaker, predicted on Fox News that members of the House committee investigating the Capitol attack will be imprisoned if Republicans retake the chamber this year.
Gingrich ran for the Republican presidential nomination in 2012. He is now a prominent Trump supporter and adviser to House Republican leaders.
Calling the members of the 6 January committee “wolves [who] are going to find out that they’re now sheep”, he said that if Republicans take Congress in November, “this is all going to come crashing down … they’re the ones who in fact, I think, face a real risk of jail for the kinds of laws they’re breaking”.
The 6 January committee has recommended criminal charges for the former White House adviser Steve Bannon and Mark Meadows, Trump’s final chief of staff. Bannon has pleaded not guilty to contempt of Congress, with a trial set for the summer. The Department of Justice has not acted regarding Meadows.
Gingrich also said the committee was “basically a lynch mob”.

New president’s ministerial team dominated by women
President-elect Gabriel Boric named a progressive cabinet with a ministerial team that, for the first time anywhere in the Americas, is dominated by women.
The 35-year-old former student leader will replace Sebastián Piñera on 11 March to be the youngest president in Chile’s history. Fourteen women and 10 men were named as ministers, in a cabinet that combines experienced moderates with former leaders from the 2011 education protest movement where Boric forged his politics.
