It’s arguable that the greatest bass player who has ever lived was the late Jaco Pastorius, whose breathtaking technique, coupled with searing innovation, inexhaustible creativity, and a charismatic personality, has made him a bass legend like none other before or since. It’s a sign of this unique status that we in the bass-playing community only need to use his first name when referring to him: Like Elvis, Madonna, and Prince, everybody knows who Jaco was.
Born on December 1, 1951 in Norristown, Pennsylvania, John Francis Pastorius III started his musical education with the jazz which his father, Jack, a professional drummer, played for him.
