…THE LORDS OF THE ISLES

In the middle of the 14th century, there emerged on the western seaboard one of the most significant political entities of the Scottish Middle Ages, and probably the most impressive institution ever produced by Gaelic Scotland: the lordship of the isles.

The roots of the lordship of the isles can be traced to the Wars of Independence, during which the1387) began calling himself ‘lord of the isles’ (, or in Gaelic), and after John came three other ‘lords’: Donald (d.1420x25), Alexander (d.1449), and John (II) (d.1503).
