Playing with fire

As she tore open the pink sparkly wrapping paper, my daughter’s eyes lit up.
‘A dolly!’ she squealed excitedly.
‘Is that what you wanted?’ I asked.
She looked at me sadly.
‘I really just wanted Daddy,’ she said.
My heart pounded.
‘He’ll be home soon,’ I said soothingly to her.
And I crossed my fingers, hoping that he wouldn’t let us down.
It was January 2017, and it was my daughter Kayleigh’s 5th birthday.
Her dad should’ve been there with us.
But he was in prison.
