The Blackline softshell is constructed from a waffle-backed (think smooth on the outside, soft on the inside) fabric, which is breathable but water-repellent, thanks to a DWR coating. There’s plenty of length through the torso to keep you covered up, even when seated on the bike. It’s a similar story for the sleeves, which are amply long and have well-designed, semi-elasticated cuffs that extend slightly at the top to overlap gloves well and keep the weather out. The hood is adjustable and will fit over a lid, and there are two zipped pockets up front. There are six sizes to choose from. In use, we were surprised by just how well the Blackline jacket worked on milder days with just a baselayer beneath it. Despite getting warm on the climbs, it seems to breathe reasonably well for a jacket of this nature. Plus, the chunky zip-pull is easy to find, even with winter gloves on, so you can whip the front zip open and quickly ditch heat. The only thing it’s missing is a drawcord at the hem so you can properly tighten the jacket up around your waist. Rob
