MINIATURE REVIEWS

Lycian warriors

Company: Gripping Beast

Size: 27mm ‘foot to eye’ or 30mm tall

Era: Ancients

Price: £7.00 for four models

www.grippingbeast.co.uk

Gripping Beast has recently released several new ranges of ancients suitable for the Punic Wars and the SAGA book Age of Hannibal. Following on from the Syracusans come three packs of Lycians (command, attacking, and advancing). These brave warriors were part of the Ionian states that resisted the Persian Em-pire, before being absorbed by them. They were ‘freed’ by the Athenians but managed to escape the clutches of the Athenian Empire only to be absorbed by the Persians again before being absorbed by the Macedonians (where they served as mercenaries) and Romans in turn! As such, these miniatures have good mileage. They will otherwise make good light hoplites, as they have little armour. The models are well cast and have good detail. Size wise, they are midranged and should fit with most existing ranges. These will be a useful addition for Greek or Macedonian generals.

USAF downed aircrew

Company: Gringo 40’s

Size: 28mm ‘foot to eye’ or 31mm tall

Era: Vietnam War

Price: £1.75 per model

Now here is another useful Vietnam release from Gringo 40’s: downed USAF aircrew. These can be used for scenario objectives (rescue the downed pilots) or for on-table aircraft that get shot down. This range reminds me of the famous rescue of Iceal E. ‘Gene’ Hambleton, a downed navigator who had to be rescued from behind enemy lines, as famously dramatized in the film Bat*21 (1988). There are seven aircrew currently, two seated pilots and a door gunner (for 1/48 scale aircraft), and five USAF aircrew on foot. These consist of two running pilots with drawn pistols, one airman pointing (who’d make a good assistant aircrew for a landed aircraft), and two armed crew with maps. The models are all well cast with minimal mould lines. Sizewise, these are on the more heroic side of 28mm but should be compatible with most existing ranges.

Guards, guards!

Company: Sally 4th

Size: 29mm ‘foot to eye’ or 33mm tall

Era: Medieval fantasy

Price: £8.00 for two models

The latest release from Sally 4th is a range of fantasy city guards. This range definitely pays homage to a certain fantasy writer and his humorous set of
