MARANTZ MODEL 40N

The arrival of the Marantz Model 40n has been lauded by some audiophiles as a “re-imagining of the classic integrated amplifier”, in part because in addition to being a classic integrated amplifier, it also has all the features you need for digital music streaming, multi-room operation and the ability to integrate with your TV.

First and foremost, the Model 40n is a very high-performance audiophile integrated amplifier rated with a power output of 70-watts per channel into 8Ω that uses a traditional linear Class-AB output stage amplifier. “This is a totally new amplifier that exceeds the performance of earlier models with similar power ratings,” said Joel Sietsema of Marantz. “It has a larger power supply transformer, four output transistors per channel, heavy copper bus bars, advanced HDAMS and very short power pathways, lower internal impedance and delivers high instant current capability making the Model 40n highly dynamic and an excellent match for even difficult-to-drive loudspeakers.”

Getting your music into the Model 40n to take advantage of this amplification is easy thanks to built-in access to Spotify Connect, Amazon Music, Tidal, TuneIn internet radio and many more. The Model 40n also provides easy access to personal digital libraries and is able to decode PCM files up to 192/24, and DSD files up to 5.6MHz. Wireless connectivity includes Apple AirPlay 2, Bluetooth and Wi-Fi with HEOS Built-In. The Marantz Model 40n also offers a full complement of analogue and digital inputs to accommodate any source, including a turntable, plus — unusually for a product in this category — it has an HDMI ARC (Audio Return Channel) input making audio playback from a TV possible. It also has a dedicated subwoofer output with an adjustable electronic crossover.

“Thanks to its HEOS Builtin technology, the Model 40n enables the entire family to enjoy their favourite music in any room for a wireless, whole-home experience,” said Paul Astbury of Sound United, which distributes Marantz in Australia. “Play the same song in every room to create a festive mood or select different songs for each connected room by adding HEOS-capable speakers throughout the home. And for an intuitive user experience, the Model 40n not only comes with a remote control but also conveniently works with Siri, Alexa and Google voice commands.” Available in two finishes — Black and Silver/Gold — the Marantz Model 40n integrated amplifier will go on sale in May for $4,449 (RRP).

GRIMM NEWS!

G0imm Audio will soon be available for the first time in Australia, with Sydney-based importer and distributor Advance Audio having been appointed as the Netherlands-based company’s exclusive Australian distributor. Advance Audio’s Nigel Ng says he’s excited about all Grimm’s products, but particularly about the Grimm MU1, the company’s flagship digital music source, about which Grimm says: “With the MU1, our goal was to set a new benchmark in music player design. The Linux-based computer system brings solid data integrity and our in-house-designed FPGA interface board, which forms the heart of the MU1, offers breakthrough performance levels in format conversion and receives automatic updates whenever we have pushed the boundaries again. Needless to say, the MU1 features our trademark ultra-low jitter clock. This is a music player worthy of the name Grimm Audio.”

Ng told Australian Hi-Fi Magazine: “We are often asked about a high-end Roon Core — or, more importantly, a demonstrably better Roon Core. This makes a lot of sense — there are plenty of end-points available, but as we well know, the source is the most important part in the hi-fi chain, so we purchased one of the MU1s from Grimm Audio a couple of months Dack to evaluate it, and were thoroughly impressed with the build quality, the performance and more importantly, it passed all our
