The ’90s were the heyday of point-and-click adventures, when the likes of LucasArts were producing memorable and witty stories that could rival other media. But even today, while we’re a bit more obsessed with cinema-realistic visuals, there is some delight in seeing Norco, an old-school pixel-art point-and-clicker, winning the inaugural Games Award at last year’s Tribeca Festival.
A mixture of Southernis set in a town of the same name in Louisiana, where protagonist Kay has returned following the death of her mother and now has to track down her missing brother. An air of mystery wafts through its atmospheric art and text, as you fill in the backstory with multiple choices and learn about Kay’s relationships with various characters, all gradually filling up a mind-map that also helps you keep track of the story and every new revelation.
