“The tabloids love to terrify with the ‘horrors’ of smart meters–but this was a new angle”

I’m going to start this month with a tip. Many of you will already know this, but I’m always amazed at the number of people who don’t. You’ll be aware that when editing or copying text a single click will position the cursor, while a double click will select the whole word. The thing that seems to have escaped many people is that a triple click will select the whole paragraph or, in a web browser, the whole URL.

I cringe every time I see someone manually trying to highlight a whole paragraph with a mouse. Everyone seems to know about left clicks, right clicks and double clicks, yet triple clicks seem to have slipped under the radar. It’s an extremely useful thing to know when editing documents or working with URLs.

Smartly does it

At the start of the year, I saw a lot of scare stories in the news about smart meters. Such things aren’t exactly new – the tabloids love to terrify people with the “horrors” of smart meters – but this was a new angle.

Typical of the coverage was this from the Express: “Smart meters will reportedly undergo a massive change and automatically send suppliers updates every 30 minutes on customers’ power use… In May, energy regulator Ofgem will be given the green light to change the way smart meters work… This could see customers charged different rates for energy throughout the day depending on demand, industry experts claimed.”
