The first ever set of tourist promotional stamps appeared in these pages last month: the 1899 New Zealand Pictorials, which hoped to encourage academic as well as leisure visitors to the islands.
It took a while for the rest the world to catch up. But, aided by developments in printing and reprographics, dozens of countries around the world have now issued stamps to promote their tourist attractions. But unlike the more popular thematics, there is no definitive listing of these stamps, let alone a catalogue. So any survey of the topic is very much a case of looking around to see what’s there.
