It’s been six years since we first learned that a new transmission was on its way for Case IH and New Holland tractors. It took a bit of time to surface but we’re told the CNH’s dual-clutch Dynamic Command (ActiveDrive 8 if you have it in red) is becoming an increasingly popular choice for operators of the company’s mid-range prime movers.
For the purposes of this article we’ll use New Holland-speak although be aware the very same options are available for anyone that has a preference for Case products.
On that basis, the three-range, eight-speed powershift Dynamic Command box slots in between the NH’s entry-level Electro Command transmission (which has lineage dating all the way back to mid-90s 40-series SLE tractors) and the company’s home-built stepless AutoCommand CVT.
What sets the newer driveline apart is the use of a dual-clutch design. Often vaunted as a Formula 1 style approach to ensuring slick shifting between ratios, it’s also a feature of the Volkswagen Group’s flappy-paddle DSG gearbox
