BIRD FANCIERS DESCEND ON CUMBRIAN VILLAGE

By mid-morning, around 500 bird enthusiasts – or ‘twitchers’ – had gathered on the village green as word spread that the elusive creature had been spotted on page 235 of The Usborne Book of Birds.

The rare avian was first sighted yesterday morning by 62-year-old retired GP Crispin O’Toole as he was flicking through the book in a neighbour’s front room. As he turned the page, the keen birder immediately recognised the animal as a rare red-necked grebe.
