THE FLEET IN COLOURISED POSTCARDS

The excellent article by Jim Shaw, Capturing the Fleet, (SM, Dec 2021) which covered Red Hallen’s views of ships in the Panama Canal, was very enjoyable as I have had an interest in the Canal and the ship transits since the early 1990s, when I was sifting through a box of ephemera in an old bookshop and came upon a set of postcard views which had been colourised from B&W originals of US Navy battleships in the giant locks of the Panama Canal.

This intrigued me, and I began a quest to hunt down more. I corresponded with collectors in the US (most of who served in the Canal Zone during the US era), which in turn led to a lifetime of collecting and researching, and my correspondence has led to lifelong friendships.
