A war that seems as illogical as it is brutal invites attempts at explanation. Perhaps some of the words and phrases associated with Vladimir Putin’s merciless belligerence in Ukraine may prove more revealing than his absurd pretexts.
The name Ukraine itself tells us something. In Russian, it means ‘on the border’, and hence also ‘territory’, usually referring to vast expanses of the Russian empire. Despite Ukraine’s long history
