BURKOVICH’S HUSTLE HELPED BUILD LEGACY OF WOMEN’S LEAGUE

Growing up in Swissvale, Pa., Shirley Burkovich didn’t know of any other girls in the town who played baseball. But that didn’t keep her from playing as much as she could.

And when her brother heard of tryouts for the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League in 1948, Burkovich tried out, even though she was just 16. She impressed and earned a spot on a roster. Burkovich ended up spending three years in the AAGPBL, serving as a utility infielder/outfielder. Her nickname was “Hustle,” which explained her approach on the field.
